Commissioner for Lands, Cross River State, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, has commended the initiative of recognising excellence and contributions to society, while advocating greater support for youth empowerment and development.
Ekpang spoke when organisers of the maiden Cross River Advocacy Awards paid him a courtesy visit as part of preparations for the inaugural ceremony scheduled for October 1, 2026.
The visit provided an opportunity for the organisers to formally introduce the awards initiative to the Commissioner and explain its objective of recognising individuals and organisations whose contributions have made meaningful impact on the development of Cross River State.
Ekpang, who has been nominated for recognition at the maiden ceremony, expressed appreciation to the organisers for considering him worthy of the honour. He described the recognition of positive contributions as an encouragement for people in public service and other fields of endeavour to remain committed to making meaningful contributions to society.
The Commissioner stressed that recognition of excellence could inspire individuals, particularly young people, to pursue their responsibilities with dedication and a strong sense of purpose. He also emphasised the importance of responsible leadership, professionalism and commitment to duty among public officers, especially those working at the grassroots.
He urged members of his team to understand their responsibilities, follow due process and protect the interests of government and the people they serve, adding that effective public service also requires communication, cooperation and mutual understanding among stakeholders.
Speaking on youth empowerment, Ekpang encouraged initiatives that promote learning, personal development and opportunities for young Nigerians, irrespective of their backgrounds or circumstances. He noted that education and exposure remained important tools for building capacity and enabling young people to contribute positively to society.
He assured the organisers of his support for initiatives that promote positive values, recognise excellence and encourage individuals and organisations to contribute to the development of Cross River State.
The maiden Cross River Advocacy Awards is expected to bring together stakeholders from government, civil society, the private sector and other sectors of public life to celebrate individuals and organisations whose activities have contributed to the advancement of the state.
Ekpang’s nomination at the inaugural ceremony carries additional significance as October 1 also coincides with his birthday, making the occasion an opportunity to celebrate both his personal milestone and his contribution to public service.
