Children’s Day: C’River NPC Commissioner Advocates Child Rights, Birth Records

The Honourable Federal Commissioner representing Cross River State at the National Population Commission (NPC), Rt. Hon. Barr. Alex Ukam, has called for collective action in safeguarding children’s rights and ensuring accurate birth registration across the state. Speaking in commemoration of the 2025 Children’s Day Celebration, Rt. Hon. Ukam praised the children of Cross River for their resilience, dedication, and unwavering love for the state. He expressed deep admiration for this year’s theme, “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Future,” describing it as a timely call to action in addressing the growing menace of bullying among children. He emphasized the urgent need to protect children from bullying, both in schools and within the home environment, noting that such experiences can severely hinder a child’s emotional and psychological development. “A child subjected to bullying is often stifled in their growth and confidence,” he said. “We must rise and speak out in defense of our children—our most treasured gifts from God and the bright future of our society.”

The NPC Commissioner urged all Cross Riverians to stand firm against all forms of bullying and violations of children’s rights. “We must recognize our children as invaluable treasures and the bedrock upon which the future of our society is built. Acts that undermine their wellbeing must be strongly discouraged,” he asserted. Barr. Ukam also underscored the critical role of census data and birth registration in child development and state planning. “The importance of birth registration cannot be overstated—it is essential for identifying children, securing their rights, including inheritance, and providing data crucial for effective policy formulation and development planning in Cross River State,” he explained. Concluding his message, Rt. Hon. Ukam offered prayers for the children of the state, asking God to bless and protect them from harm. “Together, we must champion the rights and full recognition of every child in Cross River State,” he declared.
