Creative Arts: Governor Otu Receives Merit Award

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has been honored with the 2024 Distinguished Merit Award at the 21st Abuja International Film Festival (AIFF), in recognition of his significant contributions to promote creative arts and culture in the State.

The award ceremony took place during the grand finale of a 4-day film and video broadcast festival in Abuja, Thursday.

Presenting the award, Mr. Fidelis Duker, founder of the Abuja International Film Festival, praised Governor Otu for his transformative leadership that has restored Cross River as a key tourism destination and revitalized the Calabar Carnival, while also fostering a supportive environment for the creative sector to thrive.

Receiving the award on behalf of the Governor, his Special Adviser Liaison Office, Abuja,Mrs. Sarah Archibong, expressed her appreciation to the visioner for initiatives like the Abuja International Film Festival which now serves as a veritable platform to grow the entertainment industry.

She highlighted the essential role such platforms plays in supporting and uplifting the creative arts, ensuring that Africa stories are told and cultures celebrated.

Archibong noted that since assumption of office, Governor Otu has tirelessly worked to position Cross River State as a premier destination for tourism, arts, and culture, adding that the State will not rest on its oars till the desired benefits are derived.

She cited significant projects, including the beautification of urban areas, road construction/rehabilitation, and the upcoming Calabar Carnival as evidence of his commitment to grow the industry.

The Special Adviser posited that the award will motivate Governor Otu to further promote and enhance the arts and culture in Cross River State to attract global appeals.

The Abuja International Film festival is the longest running film festival in west Africa, serving as a vital platform for film industry professionals, exhibitors, and stakeholders from various sectors, including technology, finance, academia, business, and government, to exchange ideas and foster collaboration.
