The Government and people of Cross River State have expressed profound sorrow following the passing of Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, a revered Nigerian elder statesman, business icon, and a cherished friend of the state. He was 90 years old.
In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information & Orientation, Pastor (Hon.) Ekpenyong Ene Cobham, the State described the late Tukur as more than a prominent businessman and first-class politician, but as "family."
"Alhaji Tukur was more than a prominent businessman and first-class politician. He was family," the statement read. "As an in-law to Cross River, he carried our name with pride and opened doors of opportunity for many Cross Riverians."
The Government highlighted Tukur's lasting legacy in the State, particularly his leadership as Chairman of the defunct Calabar Wood Export Processing Factory Limited.
According to the statement, his tenure left an indelible mark on the local economy and created livelihoods that touched countless homes.
The statement further emphasized his humanitarian legacy, noting, "He was a man who believed in building people and building institutions. Through his generosity and vision, many lives were lifted and many dreams were given a chance."
Alhaji Tukur passed away peacefully at his residence in Abuja on Saturday, September 12, 2026, following a brief illness. His death comes just three days shy of his 91st birthday.
The Cross River State Government extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the people of Adamawa State, and the entire nation.
"We pray that God grants his soul eternal rest, and gives his loved ones the strength to bear this great loss," the statement concluded. "Cross River will remember him not just for what he built, but for the warmth, wisdom, and dignity with which he lived," the statement concluded.
