The Cross River State House of Assembly has passed the Green Economy Commission Bill 2024 into law.
The bill an Executive initiative, was presented by a special committee led by Rt. Honorable Francis Bassey Asuquo, who represents the Odukpani State Constituency and the leader of the House.
The newly enacted law is designed to mitigate environmental risks, address ecological scarcities, and promote economic growth that minimizes the unsustainable pressure on natural resources.
Asuquo stressed that unchecked extraction, processing, and production of raw materials have led to environmental degradation, deforestation, and a negative impact on economic and social activities across the state.
“The Green Economy bill emerged from the need to address these critical challenges,” Asuquo explained. Adding that “and to create a sustainable, fair, and inclusive economic system through public and private investments aimed at reducing energy consumption and safeguarding our natural environment,” the Chief Press Secretary to Speaker Ayambem, Matthew Okache quoted him as saying.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem praised the bill as timely and crucial, saying the bill seeks to attract investments and foster economic growth in Cross River State.
