Cross River Commends NIGCOMSAT for Empowering Youths in Satellite Technology

The Cross River State Government has commended the Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd (NIGCOMSAT) for empowering youths in the state with advanced knowledge in satellite technology and digital communication.

Governor Bassey Otu gave the commendation on Monday during the opening of a five-day youth empowerment workshop held at the University of Calabar. The programme was organized by NIGCOMSAT in collaboration with the Cross River State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Represented by the Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Justin Antisng Beshel, the Governor expressed optimism that the workshop, themed “Building Grassroots Innovation in Satellite Technology,” would stimulate innovation, enhance technical capacity, and create employment opportunities for young people in the dynamic space-tech industry.

Governor Otu noted that the partnership with NIGCOMSAT aligns with his administration’s agenda to reposition Cross River as a hub for technological advancement and youth empowerment.

“This is one of several programmes aimed at transforming Cross River from a predominantly civil service state to a technology-driven and innovation-friendly economy,” he said.

“This workshop, which combines training in Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) technology and SPACEHACK 2025, is part of our efforts to integrate the state with other sub-nationals and countries in the global tech ecosystem.”

The Governor expressed gratitude to NIGCOMSAT for its swift response and commitment to youth development.

“To the MD of NIGCOMSAT, we may not fully express our appreciation in words, but we are deeply thankful for your quick action and dedication to this initiative. We look forward to deeper collaboration in future programmes.”

He assured the agency that Cross River provides a conducive environment for innovation and encouraged them to consider the state a reliable partner for future engagements.

Governor Otu also urged participants to take the training seriously, describing their selection as a rare privilege.

“Count yourselves fortunate to be nominated. Take this opportunity seriously and equip yourselves to become future entrepreneurs and digital enablers.”

Earlier, Managing Director and CEO of NIGCOMSAT, Jane Egerton-Idehen, represented by Programme Coordinator Maureen Nzekwe, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fostering youth innovation and technical capacity in satellite communications.

She thanked the Cross River State Government for embracing the initiative and revealed that out of several invitations sent to other states, only Cross River responded promptly and positively.

“This programme is designed to ensure that young people leave with valuable, practical skills. We encourage participants to make the most of it,” she said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr. Ijom Ukam, praised Governor Otu for his steadfast support for youth empowerment and human capacity development.

“This training is not just about learning a trade,” he said. “It’s about equipping young minds with the skills to drive digital connectivity, enhance information flow, and power economic growth across communities.”

Ukam explained that the training would open doors for participants to establish their own VSAT businesses, pursue academic and technical careers, or gain employment in telecom firms, NGOs, and other related sectors.

Our correspondent gathered that 200 youths are participating in the workshop—150 enrolled for VSAT training, while 50 are part of the SPACEHACK 2025 programme.

Some of the participants expressed their excitement about being selected, promising to maximize the opportunity and make meaningful use of the knowledge and skills acquired.
