Cross River Partners Greenechorett to Drive Clean Energy Transition

The Cross River State Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Prince Eka Williams, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to advancing clean energy initiatives in line with Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan (ETP).

Williams made this known when he received a delegation from Greenechorett during a courtesy visit to his office in Calabar. He commended the organization for aligning its programs with both national and state development priorities, describing the initiative as “timely and forward-looking.”

The Commissioner disclosed that the state government has developed a comprehensive 10-year action plan for the power sector, with notable progress already recorded. He emphasized that Cross River’s strategic focus on renewable energy and the green economy is not only critical for environmental sustainability but also for attracting donor support and long-term investments.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Prof. Godwin Akeke, urged Greenechorett to submit its organizational profile and a detailed project proposal for review.

Earlier, the Founder and Programs Manager of Greenechorett, Mr. Chibuzor Agomuoh, said the organization’s mission is to support state governments in driving sustainable energy policies and projects. He stressed the urgent need for Cross River to adopt a structured approach to renewable energy development, noting that the state was chosen for partnership because of its “reputation for sustainability” and its unique establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy.

“Cross River has already made remarkable strides,” Agomuoh said. “Our goal is to consolidate the work already started so the state can emerge as a pioneer in domesticating Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan.”

He revealed that Greenechorett had implemented similar projects in Anambra State and conducted preliminary studies in Cross River to evaluate renewable energy opportunities and challenges.

Presenting the organization’s advocacy brief, the Cross River State Program Manager of Greenechorett, Miss Utibe-Abasi Bassey-Duke, highlighted that Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan targets net-zero emissions by 2060.

She described Greenechorett as a policy- and action-driven platform committed to advancing clean energy goals through research, advocacy, and practical interventions. She requested the ministry’s collaboration in four key areas: conducting a baseline assessment of the state’s energy sector, implementing capacity-building programs, mobilizing stakeholders, and developing a strategic renewable energy transition framework.

Bassey-Duke added that such a partnership would position Cross River as a front-runner in Nigeria’s energy transition, while boosting economic growth and improving the wellbeing of its citizens.
