Cross River Police Contain Obanliku Incident, Recover Firearms, Restore Normalcy

The Cross River State Police Command has successfully restored calm and ensured public safety following a violent incident at Utuhu Junction in Obanliku Local Government Area, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the rule of law.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, MNISMA, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the Command clarified that its operatives were on a lawful operation to arrest suspects connected to a case of Assault Occasioning Harm reported by one Elizabeth Akinya.

The suspects, according to the statement, include Peter Odey, also known as “Ola,” Michael Ashaba, and others. The Command also debunked reports circulating online suggesting that the operation was related to unlawful gambling, describing such claims as misleading and inaccurate.

The incident reportedly occurred on February 9, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m., when the suspects violently resisted arrest, mobilised some youths, and attacked the police team. During the confrontation, two assault rifles were forcefully taken from the operatives, posing a serious threat to public safety.

In the course of efforts to prevent the escape of armed suspects and recover the police firearms, one of the suspects, Peter Odey, sustained a gunshot injury and was immediately taken to Sacred Heart Hospital, Obudu, for medical attention. Three police officers who were injured during the attack were treated at the General Hospital in Sankwala.

With the support of Military Tactical Teams, community leaders, and relevant government authorities, the Police Command confirmed that the two assault rifles were recovered, the patrol vehicle retrieved, and normalcy fully restored in the area.

The Command further disclosed that an internal investigation has commenced, stressing that no police officer is above the law and that due process will be strictly followed.

While urging members of the public to remain calm, the Police Command appealed against speculation and misinformation, assuring residents that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.
