Cross River Speaker pledges support for female commercial drivers

Members of the female commercial drivers association in Calabar

The Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Elvert Ayambem, has assured the female commercial drivers association of legislative support to advance their activities in the state.

Receiving the association during a courtesy visit to his office on Tuesday in Calabar, Ayambem commended the women for breaking stereotypes by venturing into commercial driving, describing them as “real women,” praising their discipline and patience on the road.

While charging them to remain law-abiding and prioritize safety, Ayambem assured them of the legislature’s commitment to support initiatives that would enhance their welfare and contributions to the transport sector.

He said, “Governor Bassey Otu runs a gender-friendly administration where women play integral role. Whatever we can do as a House is to strengthen your work legislatively, we are open to it.”

Earlier, the Association’s President, Mrs. Philomina Okon, explained that women in Cross River are breaking new grounds in the transportation sector, with many of them having undergone professional training facilitated by Lafarge.

She appealed to the state government to create space for women in the Ministry of Transportation, noting that such recognition would strengthen their sense of belonging and participation in governance.

Mrs. Okon further appreciated Governor Otu and his wife for their consistent support of women and assured the Speaker that the association would remain steadfast in supporting the governor’s policies and political movement ahead of 2027.
