Gov. Otu Boosts Security, Institutional Capacity with Vehicle Donations

In a strategic move to enhance security operations and strengthen institutional support across Cross River State, Governor Senator Bassey Edet Otu has formally handed over a fleet of operational vehicles to the Directors of the Homeland Security Service and the Provost of the College of Health Technology (COHTECH), Calabar.

The brief handover ceremony, held at the parking lounge of the Governor’s Office in Calabar, reflects the “People-First” administration’s sustained commitment to safeguarding lives and property while improving the delivery of public services.

Addressing attendees, Governor Otu reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering resolve to fortify security architecture statewide. He emphasized that the vehicles were strictly designated for operational use in service to the people.

“Cross River is currently one of the safest states in the country, but we are not resting on our laurels. We’re aiming for a 100 percent safe Cross River. These vehicles are not for luxury—they are vital tools for protecting lives and property across the state,” the Governor stated.

“To further reinforce this commitment, we will soon recruit additional security personnel to deepen our reach and ensure sustained peace and stability.”

While presenting the vehicle keys, Governor Otu urged the beneficiaries to uphold professionalism, accountability, and community responsiveness in the discharge of their duties.

“This is a People-First government, and your legitimacy is measured by public feedback. If that feedback is poor, there will be consequences. We expect you to remain vigilant, professional, and fully responsive to the needs of the communities you serve,” he charged.

The Governor also hinted at broader socio-economic initiatives aimed at reducing unemployment and fostering productivity across the state.

“We want more than peace—we want an active, engaged, and economically vibrant society. That’s why we’re complementing our security investments with enterprise development and empowerment programmes that uplift individuals, households, and communities,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the recipients, Mr. Raphael Odu, Director of the Northern Zone, Homeland Security Service, expressed deep gratitude for the Governor’s gesture and pledged steadfast commitment to the administration’s vision for a safer Cross River.

“We are sincerely grateful for this support. Beyond words, we will demonstrate our appreciation through exemplary service and visible outcomes that reflect Your Excellency’s vision,” he said.

In addition to the Homeland Security Service, Cross River State also operates a multi-agency joint task force known as Operation Okwok, which comprises personnel from various security formations working collaboratively to maintain peace and order across the state.
