Gov. Otu Inaugurates Building Planning and Devt. Control Taskforce

As part of the Cross River State Government’s resolve to entrench orderly development, safety standards, and strict compliance with building regulations across the state, Governor Bassey Otu, on Monday inaugurated the State Building Planning and Development Control Taskforce at the Deputy Governor’s Conference Room, Government House, Calabar.

In his remarks, Governor Otu, represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, charged members of the enforcement team to discharge their duties with professionalism, fairness, and integrity. He stressed that the taskforce is critical to curbing unapproved constructions, enforcing planning laws, and promoting sustainable urban development across the state.

Dr. Odey noted that the initiative aligns with the current administration’s commitment to urban renewal and the protection of lives and property. While urging the newly inaugurated members not to victimize anyone, he emphasized the need for collaboration with relevant ministries, departments, agencies, and local government authorities to ensure effective enforcement and sustained public sensitization. He also called on residents and developers to strictly adhere to approved building plans and established planning guidelines.

In his introductory remarks, the Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of the State Planning Commission, Dr. Bong Duke, said the team was carefully selected by the Governor to monitor, control, and guide building development in both urban and rural areas of the state. He decried the prevalence of indiscriminate construction, lack of due process, poor planning, and non-adherence to approved designs.

Dr. Duke listed members of the enforcement team to include Mr. Akiba Ekpenyong Akiba (Chairman), Emmanuel Ansa (Secretary), Surv. Dr. Echeng Isaac Edoki, Umon Antigha Etim, Clement Effiong Essien, Eko Collins, Hon. Otu Ibor Obeten, Sunday Erim Inyang, Felix Archibong Edet, Christopher William Bepeh, and Mr. Augustine Egbung.

In his acceptance speech on behalf of the team, the Chairman, Mr. Akiba Ekpenyong Akiba, expressed gratitude to Governor Otu for the confidence reposed in them. He assured the state government of the team’s readiness to diligently discharge its mandate and support the administration’s vision of a well-planned, safe, and sustainable Cross River State.

Also in attendance were the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief (Dr.) Emmanuel Ironbar, Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Ededem Charles Ani, Commissioner for Lands, Chief Francis Ekpenyong, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Head of Personal Staff to the Deputy Governor, Dr. Chris Ojikpong, Director-General of CRGIA, William Archibong, representatives of relevant MDAs, and other top government officials.
