In his ongoing efforts to foster a conducive work environment and enhance productivity, Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State Wednesday, commissioned the Local Government Service Commission Building, at the New Secretariat, Calabar.
The new edifice is to eliminate the challenges associated with renting temporary office spaces for the commission's operations and enhance productivity.
Speaking at the well attended commissioning ceremony, Governor Otu expressed gratitude that his administration has successfully rejuvenated 40 percent of all abandoned projects, fulfilling a promise made upon assuming office.
He highlighted the completed Local Government Service Commission complex, which had remained unfinished since 2015, as tangible evidence of this commitment.
Emphasizing the importance of local government as the closest segment to the people, Governor Otu underscored his administration’s dedication to enhancing its capacity in order to deliver efficient services.
On the issue of ghost workers, the Governor urged the Local Government Service Commission to adopt a new approach, ensuring that their transition into the new building includes a payroll system free of ghost workers. This measure he said was essential for fulfilling the government's promise to disburse retirement entitlements within one week of an employee's retirement.
He commended all those who worked diligently to bring the project to fruition and assured Cross Riverians of a brighter future in the years ahead.
In his opening address, Chief Victor-Felix Idem, Commissioner for the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, praised Governor Otu for what he described as a significant milestone and for his unwavering commitment to restoring the functionality of local government agencies.
"Today marks not just the completion of a physical structure but the realization of this administration's vision to serve our citizens more effectively and efficiently," he asserted.
On his part, Mr. Darlington Bassey, Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, viewed the commissioning as a major milestone for the State, characterizing the new complex as one of the best in Nigeria.
He commended the Governor for constructing such a magnificent building, describing him as a man of passion and possibility, adding, "We have never had it this good."
The Chairman expressed gratitude for no longer being a tenant but now a landlord and pledged to ensure the payroll system is sanitized and made worthwhile.
