Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to resolving outstanding gratuities, completing inherited projects, and driving economic transformation. Speaking during a media parley with journalists yesterday, Governor Otu outlined his government’s strategic approach to addressing workers’ welfare, infrastructure development, and economic revitalization.
Addressing concerns about unpaid gratuities, Governor Otu acknowledged the financial burden inherited by his administration, stressing that tackling the backlog remains a top priority. He expressed deep concern for retirees who dedicated over three decades of service to the state, only to face hardship due to unpaid entitlements.
“The people who worked hard for this state deserve better. Their prayers should not be prayers of tears,” the governor lamented.
He assured that while the challenge is immense—requiring substantial financial resources—the government is making gradual but steady progress in settling the arrears. He revealed that the administration had already begun payments but encountered setbacks due to the implementation of the new minimum wage.
Despite these challenges, Governor Otu reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to clear outstanding gratuities. He also disclosed that ongoing demographic verification has revealed cases of fraudulent claims, with payments being made to ineligible individuals. The Governor assured that measures are being taken to ensure only genuine beneficiaries receive their entitlements.
Responding to skepticism about Cross River State’s ability to undertake major projects, Governor Otu emphasized that the state has the potential to rival economic powerhouses in the comity of Nigerian states. He rejected any notion that Cross River is incapable of handling large-scale investments, stressing that its past status as Nigeria’s capital proves its capacity for growth.
“I don’t want anyone to look down on Cross River’s potential. This state was once the capital of Nigeria. Our ability to attract investment remains strong,” he asserted.
The governor pointed to the $3.5 billion Bakassi Deep Sea Port project as a testament to the state’s credibility, noting that such a project could not have secured international funding if it was not viable. He stressed that Cross River has demonstrated financial prudence and future-driven planning, making it attractive to investors.
“You cannot secure a $3.5 billion investment from Exim Bank if the project is not bankable. Many others have tried and failed to secure even $500 million. This shows we are serious about economic growth,” he added.
Governor Otu reaffirmed his commitment to completing projects initiated by previous administrations, emphasizing that public funds must not be wasted. He assured that projects with significant government investment, including the Obudu Cargo Airport and various industrial factories, would not be abandoned.
“We will not walk away from projects our predecessors started, especially those funded with public money. Our goal is to ensure every kobo spent delivers value to the people of Cross River,” he declared.
The Governor highlighted ongoing efforts to revitalize over 100 healthcare facilities, improve access to clean drinking water, and invest in education through scholarships and school infrastructure.
He further revealed that work is ongoing on geotechnical studies for the Bakassi Deep Sea Port, assuring that the project would soon reach a groundbreaking phase.
Governor Otu emphasized that his administration stands against financial mismanagement and is committed to accountability in governance. He assured the people of Cross River that every decision taken is aimed at ensuring the state’s sustainable development, job creation, and economic prosperity.
“Cross Riverians must believe in our ability to transform this state. The money we are attracting is investor-driven, not government money. Investors trust our leadership, and that is why they are willing to bring their funds here,” he concluded.
As the administration pushes forward with its agenda, Governor Otu urged the people of Cross River to remain hopeful and committed to the collective vision of a prosperous state.
