Political advocacy group, CODE 888, has expressed support for the performance of Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s administration, nominating the Commissioner for Lands, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, to its Advisory Council and unveiling plans for its “Complete the Eight Campaign” ahead of the 2027 political season.
The Director-General of the group, Engr. Maurice Nkong, disclosed this on Thursday when the organisation paid a courtesy visit to Erasmus Ekpang in his office in Calabar, explaining that the engagement was aimed at formally introducing CODE 888 to the Commissioner, appreciating him for promptly responding to its request and seeking his participation in its activities.
Nkong said CODE 888 was established to advocate equity, justice and fairness in the distribution of political opportunities across Cross River State, particularly in response to concerns over perceived imbalances in the rotation of political leadership among the state’s senatorial districts.
He explained that the organisation had over the years mobilised support around what it considered fairness and continuity in political representation, adding that the “Complete the Eight Campaign” would mobilise support for the continuation of the present administration based on its assessment of Governor Otu’s performance.
The group commended the Governor’s interventions in security, infrastructure, healthcare, environmental sanitation, employment and other sectors. It particularly noted improvements in security in Calabar and other parts of the state, as well as interventions in waste management, road construction and rehabilitation and primary healthcare.
A major highlight of the visit was the nomination of Erasmus Ekpang to serve on CODE 888’s Advisory Council. He was subsequently decorated with the group’s regalia alongside other respected individuals expected to contribute their experience, guidance and strategic counsel to the organisation.
The CODE 888 delegation expressed appreciation to the Commissioner, Permanent Secretary, Directors and staff of the Ministry for the warm reception. The group also commended Governor Otu for appointing what it described as competent leadership in the Ministry and expressed confidence that the Commissioner’s experience would add value to its Advisory Council.
The group reiterated its commitment to the principles of justice, fairness and equity, while preparing for its activities and the “Complete the Eight Campaign” ahead of the 2027 political season.
Responding, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang thanked the leadership and members of CODE 888 for the visit and the confidence reposed in him, describing his nomination to the Advisory Council as an honour and assuring the group of his willingness to provide appropriate guidance and support within the limits of his responsibilities.
The Commissioner also acknowledged the leadership of Governor Otu, highlighting the administration’s extensive road construction and rehabilitation projects, efforts to strengthen healthcare facilities and recruit health personnel, as well as initiatives in environmental sanitation, diaspora engagement and the revitalisation of government-owned media and printing institutions.
Speaking on the Ministry of Lands, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang stressed the importance of responsible land administration and effective development control, noting that proper assessment of land, soil composition and the suitability of sites for different categories of development were essential to preventing avoidable disasters and ensuring sustainable urban development.
He called for stronger collaboration among professionals and relevant authorities to ensure that developments comply with approved standards, stressing that development control must be guided by technical competence, professionalism and the public interest. He also assured the delegation that his doors remained open to stakeholders seeking appropriate guidance and support.
