The Executive Chairman of Obudu Local Government Council, Hon. (Amb.) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, has felicitated with the people of Obudu on the occasion of the 2025 New Yam Festival, urging residents to use the celebration as a time to promote love, unity, and peaceful coexistence across communities.
Addressing attendees during the official ceremony held on Saturday at the Obudu Council Secretariat, Hon. Undiandeye described the New Yam Festival as a period of thanksgiving and cultural pride, as well as an opportunity to reinforce communal bonds and strengthen social harmony.
He emphasized the cultural and historical importance of the festival, stating that such celebrations are vital to preserving the heritage, values, and identity of the Obudu people.
Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to cultural preservation, Hon. Undiandeye pledged continued support for traditional institutions, festivals, and initiatives that sustain the customs and values of the Obudu people.
He also used the platform to commend the hardworking farmers of Obudu, acknowledging their significant contributions to food security and economic stability within the Local Government Area and Cross River State at large.
The colourful celebration featured a rich display of cultural heritage, including traditional music, dances, and the ceremonial presentation of the new yam, a symbolic act of gratitude to God, the gods, and ancestors for a fruitful harvest. Winners of various cultural competitions were also announced and awarded prizes during the event.
The festival was graced by an array of dignitaries, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Chief (Dr) Emmanuel Ironbar, Member representing Obanliku/Bekwarra/Obudu Federal Constituency, Hon. Peter Akpanke, Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Sylvester Agabi, and the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barr. Alphonsus Eba.
Also in attendance were council chairmen, members of the State Executive Council, government appointees, traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and other prominent stakeholders from within and outside the local government.
