OBUDU LGA CHAIRMAN AND TRADITIONAL RULERS OFFICIALLY FLAG OFF 2025 NEW YAM FESTIVAL

The Obudu Local Government Chairman, Hon. (Amb) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, in company of the Obudu Traditional Rulers Council, today officially flagged off the 2025 New Yam Festival at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Obudu, HRM Utsu Felix Ukudare.

The historic ceremony, which marked the commencement of this year’s celebrations, was graced by the Vice Chairman of Council, Hon. Rhoda Ashong, the Leader of Council, Hon. Samuel Ashibi, Councilors, political appointees, community leaders, and stakeholders. The event also attracted cultural troupes, women groups, and youths, all of whom turned out in large numbers to celebrate the cultural heritage of the Obudu people.

In his address, Hon. Undiandeye described the New Yam Festival as a symbol of unity, gratitude, and cultural identity. He lauded the traditional institution for its steadfast role in preserving the values of the people, stressing that the festival remains a unifying force across generations.

The Council Chairman further noted that this year’s festival resonates with the broader celebrations across the Northern Senatorial District and pledged that the Local Government would continue to support initiatives that promote culture, tourism, and community development.

On his part, HRM Utsu Felix Ukudare expressed deep gratitude to God for a fruitful harvest season and commended the resilience of the Obudu people. He emphasized the spiritual and cultural significance of the New Yam Festival, urging all sons and daughters of the land to participate actively in the activities lined up. The Paramount Ruler also offered prayers for peace, prosperity, and progress in Obudu, Cross River State, and Nigeria at large.

Following the Paramount Ruler’s speech, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee of the New Yam Festival and Supervisor for Information, Culture, Tourism, and Orientation, Mr. Noel Ugbong, addressed the royal fathers. He briefed them on the activities that will follow the official opening from Day 1 through Day 6, highlighting cultural displays, communal feasts, dances, and other programs designed to showcase the rich heritage of Obudu.

Mr. Ugbong further assured the royal fathers and the people that next year’s celebration will be even bigger and more organized, as the committee plans to begin preparations much earlier to give the festival greater visibility and impact.

The official flag-off featured traditional rites, cultural music, and dance performances, signaling the beginning of a week-long celebration that will climax on Saturday, 6th September, 2025, with the grand finale.

The atmosphere at the palace was filled with color, excitement, and cultural displays, showcasing the pride of the Obudu people in their traditions and heritage.
