Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has approved a significant reduction in transport tickets payable by inter-city drivers across the state, in a move aimed at easing operating costs and creating a more conducive environment for transport operators.
Under the new arrangement, outbound inter-city drivers will now pay ₦750, down from the previous ₦1,350, representing a reduction of ₦600, while drivers operating from private parks will pay ₦450, compared with the former ₦750.
The reduction, contained in a press release signed by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Linus Obogo, followed extensive consultations with stakeholders in the transport sector and reflects the administration’s response to concerns affecting the daily operations and livelihoods of transport operators.
The new charges are expected to reduce the financial burden on transport operators while contributing to a more efficient transportation system across the state.
The initiative is also expected to facilitate the movement of people and goods, strengthen linkages between communities and markets, and support commercial activities across Cross River.
With its agricultural resources, tourism assets and growing economic opportunities, the state relies significantly on an efficient transportation network to connect communities, businesses and investment destinations.
Affordable transportation is particularly important to the movement of agricultural produce and other resources from rural communities to urban markets, while also enabling people to access economic opportunities and essential services across the state.
The Governor’s approval underscores his administration’s wider commitment to policies that promote economic activity, improve the business environment and support the welfare of transport operators and other citizens.
The reduction also reinforces the administration’s approach of engaging relevant stakeholders in developing practical responses to economic pressures affecting businesses and livelihoods.
The state government reiterated its determination to sustain consultations with stakeholders and pursue policies that reduce unnecessary burdens on businesses while promoting sustainable livelihoods and inclusive economic development.
