PDP Faces Extinction in Etomi as APC Welcomes More Returnees

The APC in Etomi Ward, Etung Local Government Area of Cross River State, is consolidating its grassroots presence as more former members return to the ruling party from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The latest returnee, Mr Fred Ori Amba, has further fuelled questions about the future of the opposition party in the community.

Amba was warmly received into the APC following a strategic political meeting in Calabar involving prominent Etomi stakeholders, including Barr. Gilbert Agbor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Asset Management and Recovery; Hon. Patrick Ebam Emmanghe, former Commissioner for Special Duties; Dr Cyril Abang Agbor, Head of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Calabar; former councillor representing Etomi Ward, Hon. Roland Oku Takon; and Mr Mgboki Emmanghe. His return comes amid a growing wave of political realignments that has continued to strengthen the APC’s presence in Etomi.

Welcoming Amba back to the APC, Barr. Gilbert Agbor attributed the growing return of former members to his grassroots political base and sustained engagement with the people. He urged Amba and other returnees to close ranks with fellow party members and support Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s second-term bid, noting that the Governor had performed credibly in office and deserved another term to consolidate his achievements and advance the state’s development agenda.

Also speaking, Hon. Patrick Ebam Emmanghe stressed the need for unity and cooperation among the people of Etomi. He explained that meaningful development could only be achieved when stakeholders and community members came together with a common purpose, adding that collective action and a shared commitment to progress were essential to bringing about the desired changes in the community.

Dr Cyril Abang Agbor commended Amba for his wisdom and bold action in returning to what he described as the progressives’ family. He noted that the decision to return to the APC reflected a willingness to align with the party and contribute to its political activities and grassroots development in Etomi.

Similarly, Hon. Roland Oku Takon assured Amba and other prospective returnees that the doors of the APC would remain open to welcome more people into the party. He emphasised the importance of inclusiveness and cooperation, noting that the party was ready to receive those willing to join its fold and work towards the collective political aspirations of the people.

The continuing return of former members to the APC has placed the PDP under renewed pressure to retain its remaining members and sustain its grassroots influence. While the ruling party continues to expand its political network in Etomi, the opposition faces questions about its ability to maintain internal cohesion and remain competitive. The latest development has further fuelled the political narrative surrounding the PDP’s declining influence in the ward.
