Police Arrest Suspected Cultist Over Armed Robbery, Recover Firearm in Cross River

The Cross River State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on crime with the arrest of a 24-year-old suspected cultist and armed robber, identified as Fode Bassey.

The suspect was apprehended by police operatives following a violent robbery incident reported on March 29, 2026, in which a victim, Edim, was attacked by four armed youths. The assailants, wielding cutlasses and a firearm, reportedly inflicted injuries on the victim’s left hand and threatened his life before making away with a bag containing a Delight solar battery valued at ₦185,000 and cash totaling ₦326,000.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, said detectives acted swiftly on the report to track down the suspect. “Following the report, our operatives launched a coordinated operation which led to the arrest of the suspect. He has confessed to the crime, and a locally fabricated pistol was recovered from him,” he said.

Police investigations further revealed that the suspect and his accomplices are members of the notorious Vikings Secret Cult Confraternity. The Command noted that the arrest is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and curb cult-related activities in the state.

The Commissioner of Police also reassured residents of sustained security operations, emphasizing the Command’s resolve to protect lives and property. “We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all residents. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects, and we urge members of the public to continue to support the police with credible information,” the Commissioner stated.

The Command added that investigations are ongoing, with intensified efforts to arrest the remaining suspects and bring them to justice.
