The Cross River State Police Command has appealed to members of the public for assistance in identifying a young child found wandering within a church premises in Calabar.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eitokpah Sunday, the Command disclosed that the child was discovered on Monday morning at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Akim, and was handed over to the police by a security guard.
“The child could not provide his name, address, or any information that could help identify his parents or guardians,” the statement said, noting that efforts to obtain useful details from him proved unsuccessful.
The police explained that preliminary findings suggest the child may have been abandoned or may have lost his way.
“He is currently in protective custody at the Akim Police Station, where adequate care and safety measures have been put in place pending identification,” the Command added.
The Police further called on members of the public to assist with relevant information.
“Anyone who has information about a missing child or can help identify him is urged to report to the Akim Police Station or contact the nearest police formation,” the statement said.
The Command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives, particularly vulnerable members of society, while intensifying efforts to reunite the child with his family.
