PRESS RELEASE OBUDU COUNCIL CHAIRMAN CONDEMNS BARBARIC KILLING OF A TIV INDIGENE, CALLS FOR CALM AND UNITY

The Executive Chairman of Obudu Local Government Area, Hon. (Amb) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, has expressed deep sorrow and strong condemnation over the killing of a Tiv indigene in Obudu, following the recent unrest linked to the violent clash between the Mbazerem community of Vandiekya and the Abonkib village of Obudu.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman described the incident as “barbaric, unfortunate and totally unacceptable act that threatens the peace and brotherhood we strive to uphold.” This comes on the heels of the disturbing news of two sons of Obudu Nicolas and Ake, both of Aboinkib and Atiekpe clans respectively, who have been declared missing in the aftermath of the recent communal clash.

Hon. Undiandeye firmly condemned the retaliatory violence, stressing that taking the law into one’s hands is not the solution to the ongoing crisis. He called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and allow the constituted authorities to investigate and address the matter appropriately.

“I deeply regret the loss of lives on both sides and extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Every life is valuable, and no act of violence can be justified. The cycle of revenge must stop,” the Chairman stated.

He further disclosed that security agencies have been mobilized to maintain order and prevent further breakdown of law and order, while assuring all affected communities that the government is taking swift steps to de-escalate tensions and pursue justice for all victims.

Hon. Undiandeye appealed to traditional rulers, youth leaders, and community stakeholders to intensify dialogue and cooperation, urging all residents of Obudu, including the Tiv community, to remain calm, law-abiding, and united in the face of this regrettable situation.
