The Federal Government has released ₦515 million as relief for victims of the recent fire outbreak at the SPAR shopping mall in Calabar, Cross River State.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu announced the intervention on Friday during her visit to the state, where she also flagged off the South-South phase of the National Community Foodbank Programme.
She disclosed that President Bola Tinubu approved ₦25 million for each of the 18 affected business owners, totaling ₦450 million.
Additionally, ₦50 million was presented to the Governor's wife, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu, to support women’s groups, while ₦15 million was allocated to local women who welcomed her.
“Mr. President commiserates with the Government and people of Cross River over this unfortunate incident that destroyed many businesses and livelihoods,” the First Lady said. “This intervention is to provide immediate support and help victims recover from their losses.”
The relief follows the August 22 fire incident, which destroyed property worth billions of naira and affected numerous businesses.
Speaking on the Foodbank Programme, Senator Tinubu noted it is designed to enhance food security and combat malnutrition among vulnerable households across the South-South, thereby complementing existing welfare efforts.
Receiving the First Lady, Governor Bassey Edet Otu thanked President Tinubu and Senator Oluremi Tinubu for the timely gesture. “The relief package will provide meaningful assistance to the affected business owners as they commence the process of rebuilding,” he stated.
He also praised the Federal Government for bolstering social protection through the programme and expressed delight that Cross River was selected to host the South-South phase, reaffirming the FG's commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians.
