The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has matriculated 7,105 newly admitted students across its three campuses, with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, urging them to pursue academic excellence and maintain good character throughout their stay in the institution.
Prof. Bassey gave the charge during the university’s 24th matriculation ceremony for newly admitted students held at the Calabar campus.
She expressed appreciation to the Cross River State Governor, members of the Governing Council, the University Senate, as well as parents and guardians for their continued support towards the growth and development of the university.
The Vice Chancellor reminded the matriculating students that the institution awards degrees not only on the basis of academic performance but also on the demonstration of sound learning and good character.
“You must understand that this institution does not only reward academic excellence but also places high value on character. Your conduct throughout your stay here will play a vital role in shaping your future,” she said.
Prof. Bassey also encouraged the students to take advantage of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), noting that the initiative provides financial support that can help reduce the burden of educational expenses during their academic journey.
Reaffirming the management’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, she disclosed that the best-performing department during the forthcoming Students’ Week would receive a special reward to be personally funded from her salary as Vice Chancellor.
On discipline, the Vice Chancellor cautioned students against examination malpractice, drug abuse, indecent dressing and other forms of misconduct capable of disrupting peace and order on campus.
She urged the students to remain focused and committed to their studies, stressing that success and greatness are achieved through dedication, discipline and hard work.
During the ceremony, Deans of Faculties led students from their respective faculties in taking the oath of good conduct.
The matriculation exercise will continue at the Ogoja and Okuku campuses on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
