The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has intensified efforts to strengthen security across its campuses with the successful completion of a two-week intensive training programme for prospective security personnel.
The training, organised by the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with the University’s Internal Security Unit, was designed to equip prospective recruits with the knowledge, skills and physical preparedness required for effective and professional campus security operations.
The programme combined rigorous physical fitness exercises with medical assessments, security-related instruction and public relations training to prepare the candidates for the demands of university security.
The public relations component was particularly designed to equip the prospective security personnel with the skills to interact professionally and respectfully with students, staff and members of the University’s host communities.
The exercise also provided an opportunity for the candidates to demonstrate their physical fitness, discipline, alertness and overall suitability for the responsibilities associated with campus security.
At the completion of the practical and physical components, the candidates are expected to sit for formal examinations, with those who meet the stipulated physical, medical, security screening and examination requirements to be considered for appointment.
The Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Professor Francisca Bassey, personally monitored the training sessions, demonstrating the commitment of the University Management to ensuring that the recruitment and selection process meets the required professional and institutional standards.
Her presence also enabled her to observe the conduct of the exercise firsthand and ensure that personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and members of the University’s Internal Security Unit maintained the required standards throughout the programme.
The Chief Security Officer of the University, Superintendent Iwara Ibiang (Rtd), played a key role in coordinating the training and ensuring the smooth implementation of the programme.
The initiative underscores the commitment of the Professor Francisca Bassey-led administration to providing a safe and secure environment conducive to teaching, learning, research and other activities within the University community.
The University said the exercise reflects its continued focus on strengthening its internal security architecture through proper recruitment, professional training and adherence to established procedures.
With the completion of the training and forthcoming examinations, the University expects the process to produce suitably qualified personnel capable of contributing effectively to the safety and security of the UNICROSS community.
