The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, University of Calabar, was aglow with encomiums as it formally welcomed its Pioneer Dean and Deputy Dean.
This followed the appointments of Prof. Esekong Andrew-Essien and Dr. Patrick Ene Okon as the Pioneer Dean and Deputy Dean of the newly created Faculty.
Speaking at a reception ceremony held at the former Department of Mass Communication, the Pioneer Dean expressed profound gratitude for the warm reception extended by the Heads of Departments, staff, and students of the Faculty.
Prof. Esekong also commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, for the confidence reposed in them to lead the Faculty.
He further applauded her for the tremendous positive changes she has instituted, which have contributed to the upward growth trajectory of the University.
The Dean reiterated that the appointment does not confer a sense of superior accomplishment but rather presents a new role that calls for reflection, humility, responsibility, and selfless service.
He emphasized that the leadership framework for the Faculty will be a blend of the servant-leadership model, participatory governance, and transformational leadership structures.
Prof. Esekong applauded the leadership that steered the Faculty from its early days as a Department under the Faculty of Arts, recognizing Dr. Joseph Ekpang, Prof. Uzoma Okugo, and Dr. Lawrence Ekwok for their tireless efforts, dedication, hard work, and commitment in laying a solid foundation upon which he now intends to build.
He noted that the remarkable work done by these foundational leaders must be strengthened to ensure global competitiveness.
The Pioneer Dean assured staff and students of his administration's commitment to pursuing and institutionalizing academic excellence while upholding best practices.
Quoting him: "No one person can singlehandedly run a Faculty. The task must be a collective one."
He added that the Faculty will continue to align with the University's established traditions.
Prof. Esekong Andrew-Essien urged both staff and students to take ownership of the Faculty by ensuring maximum cooperation toward its growth and development.
The Pioneer Deputy Dean, Dr. Patrick Ene Okon, also expressed gratitude for the appointment, assuring faculty members of his unwavering commitment to the development of the Faculty.
Dr. Okon stressed that the wellbeing of students is paramount to him and encouraged them to speak up whenever they face challenges.
The Head of Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Lawrence Ekwok, commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, for her support throughout the accreditation and approval process of the Faculty, especially during the rigorous scrutiny by the National Universities Commission.
Dr. Ekwok also emphasized the tremendous contributions of his predecessors, Dr. Joseph Ekpang and Prof. Uzoma Okugo, toward making the dream of the Faculty a reality.
He noted that the emerging Faculty comprises seven (7) Departments, six (6) of which are new programmes, including Advertising, Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Studies, Development Communication, Public Relations, and Strategic Communication.
