Cross River State Commissioner for Works, Pius Edet, has reiterated that Governor Bassey Otu is focused on developing road infrastructure despite the state’s lean resources.
During a recent inspection of ongoing road projects in Calabar, the state capital, on Friday, the commissioner emphasised state government’s unwavering commitment to enhancing essential infrastructure like roads, even in the face of financial challenges.
He noted that Governor Otu is implementing innovative approaches to maximise resources, ensuring that every investment in road infrastructure aligns with the state’s broader development objectives.
“The government recognises that infrastructure is vital for economic growth and improving the quality of life for our citizens. We are making prudent use of the resources at our disposal to deliver impactful projects,” Edet remarked.
He praised the current administration for its visionary leadership, noting that the ongoing road projects throughout the state reflect Governor Otu’s commitment to fostering sustainable development.
He also disclosed the government’s strategy of employing direct labour for certain road projects, aimed at promoting local content, optimising resource management, and reducing capital flight, saying that notable projects completed through this method include the 30-meter Yellow Duke Bridge, MCC Road, Odukpani Junction, Satellite Town, and a 400-meter stretch of Edem Ekpenyong Street by Otop Abasi Road, among others.
He stressed that the positive impact of these initiatives on Cross Riverians is significant.
The commissioner, while reassuring that the government remains dedicated to completing vital projects in the state, also expressed optimism that “an increase in the state’s internally generated revenue would provide additional funding for infrastructure development.”
He also called for the continued support of all Cross Riverians and residents for the Otu-led administration, which he affirmed is committed to fulfilling its policies for the betterment of the community.
