Celebrating 18th Leboku International Festival In Style As Gov’t Promises to Build On Cultural Economy of Various Communities

On August 21, 2024, the Yakurr nation in Cross River State will mark the 18th Leboku International New Yam Festival in Ugep, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Yakạạ-speaking communities. The festival, a vibrant three-week event honoring the earth goddess and ancestral spirits, includes unique activities such as traditional dances, beauty pageants, poetry contests, and festive parades.

Cross River State’s Special Adviser on Events Management, Mr. Effiong Ekpenyong, emphasized the state’s commitment to enhancing the cultural economy of Yakurr communities. Highlighting Governor Bassey Edet Otu’s “people first” policy, Ekpenyong assured continued support for the festival’s growth, aiming to integrate it into the global cultural economy. The festival will feature new branding and a focus on sustainable growth, reflecting Cross River’s dedication to preserving and promoting its cultural heritage.
