UNICAL Benefits From Federal Govt Solar Power Project

The federal government has begun the installation of a 7.0kva solar power system at the university of Calabar main Campus in Calabar.

The solar power project which is coordinated by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) is expected to be completed between August/September 2024

The regional coordinator South South of REA Engr. Rose Ekpenyong said the mandate of the agency is to provide electricity to communities that do not have light and The University of Calabar is privileged to be included in this early phase of the light provision scheme.

The state commissioner for power and renewable energy Prince Eka Williams said the 7.0kva solar farm is a project that will take care of the university community and even the host community.

He enjoined the school management to consider setting up a Department of Renewable Energy in the institution adding that the farm should be a training ground for engineers in renewable energy.

On her part, the Vice Chancellor of the University Of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi maintained that electricity is a basic amenity for students as the need constant energy to be able to carry out their activities academic activities.

Prof. Obi thanked the Lead Resident Engineer and REA for offering to train selected students on the electrical and mechanical components of the Solar package as this could be a life time opportunity for them.
