In a bid to strengthen the quality of basic education across Cross River State, the Ministry of Education has commenced a comprehensive training and capacity-building workshop for inspectors under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
The training, which is currently ongoing in Calabar, is being organized by the Department of Quality Assurance and aims to transition existing SUBEB inspectors into certified Quality Assurance Evaluators.
The initiative draws participants from all 18 Local Government Areas of the state, reflecting a statewide commitment to raising educational standards through effective monitoring and evaluation of teaching and learning processes.
Declaring the workshop open at the West African People’s Institute (WAPI), Calabar, the Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Odey, represented by the Director of Higher Education, Dr. Moses Agboreyo, emphasized the significance of the training.
He described it as the beginning of a new professional chapter for the participants and a major step toward reforming the basic education sector in line with global best practices.
“This training is not just a formality—it is a reorientation. It marks your transition from traditional inspection roles to dynamic quality assurance responsibilities. You are being empowered to be agents of change and accountability in our schools,” Dr. Agboreyo said.
The workshop features a blend of theoretical lectures, practical sessions, and pre-examination exercises designed to assess participants’ readiness for the new roles.
Resource persons include the Head of Department for Quality Assurance, Mrs. Ngozi Offiong, education consultant Dr. Fanny Ekabua, and education expert Dr. Esua, all of whom delivered presentations on the principles, frameworks, and methodologies of educational quality assurance.
In her remarks, Mrs. Offiong highlighted the integrity of the selection process, stressing that only candidates who pass the rigorous examinations will be certified as Quality Assurance Evaluators.
“We are focused on competence, not favouritism. The process is transparent, and only those who meet the performance benchmarks will proceed,” she said.
The event drew attendance from key education stakeholders, including the Coordinating Supervisory Director (CSD) of the Calabar Zonal Office, Education Secretaries from Calabar South, Calabar Municipality, and Odukpani Local Government Areas.
Their presence underscored the importance of collaborative oversight in the implementation of education policy reforms across the state, the ministry said.
Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity and committed to upholding the standards and values imparted during the workshop.
This training initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Cross River State government to ensure continuous improvement in learning outcomes, school administration, and teaching quality in public schools, the ministry added.
