C'River Marks Elderly Day, Reaffirms Commitment to Dignity and Inclusive Care

The Cross River State Government has joined the rest of the world to mark the International Day for the Elderly, reaffirming its commitment to upholding the dignity, welfare and inclusive care of senior citizens.

The event, held at the Women Development Centre, Calabar on Friday, was themed “Respect, Care and Inclusion for a Dignified Ageing,” with emphasis on building a society where every elderly person matters.

Speaking at the ceremony organized by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Community Development, the Commissioner, Archbishop Margaret Ene-Ita, said the administration of Governor Bassey Otu places a high premium on the elderly as custodians of wisdom and cultural heritage.

She noted that government is strengthening social protection programmes, community-based care and free healthcare initiatives to ensure that no elderly person is left behind, while calling on families and communities to show love and respect to older persons.

The Commissioner stressed the need to recognise, respect and support senior citizens, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that older persons enjoy dignity, care and a sense of belonging in their communities.

The celebration also featured a health talk delivered by Dr. Nina O., who sensitized participants on health and wellness issues affecting older persons, with emphasis on healthy living and proper healthcare in old age.

As part of the celebration, the elderly received special care and support, including cash assistance, wrappers and other essential relief materials distributed to ease their needs and improve their well-being.

The event underscored the Ministry's commitment to promoting the welfare of older persons and ensuring that their contributions to society are recognised, valued and appreciated.

It also served as a reminder that caring for the elderly is a shared responsibility and a true measure of a compassionate and inclusive society.
