The Unity Torch for the forthcoming Niger Delta Games in Uyo was received in Cross River state on Monday with a pledge by the state to put in their best to excel in the regional games.
Receiving the torch, the state Acting Governor Hon. Peter Odey said Criss River State as a Niger Delta state is actively participating in the festival and expressed confidence that its athletes would bring home laurels.
“We receive this torch as a mark that Cross River State is going to participate actively in the NDDC program.”
“We hope that as we have received this torch today, the people in NDDC will also remember Cross River State positively in all the interventions that NDDC is supposed to make in our state,”.
“We assure our contingent of government support and promised to be present at the festival to cheer you all to victory” the Acting Governor remarked.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, the state commissioner for sports Mrs. Agnes Asu revealed that Cross River state has carefully selected a formidable team of 318 athletes and 56 coaches after rigorous trials conducted at the local government, senatorial district, and state levels. She added that the team is ready to represent the state while expressing confidence that the athletes will return with medals.
The state NDDC commissioner Rt Hon Orok Duke on his part maintained that the Niger Delta sports festival is one of the events integrated into activities lined up to mark the NDDC 25th anniversary celebration.
He stated that the event also aims to foster unity and talent development among the nine NDDC-member states.
