Cross River SUBEB Begins Distribution of Revised Curriculum, Learning Materials to 1,084 Public Schools

The Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has flagged off the distribution of revised curriculum, instructional materials, sports equipment and sanitation facilities to 1,084 public primary schools across the state’s 18 Local Government Areas in a major push to improve the quality of basic education.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Mrs. Fedelia Okpo Ene, said the intervention includes revised primary school curricula, textbooks, teachers’ guides, sports equipment, special education materials, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources and 120-litre waste bins for schools.

Mrs. Ene explained that every public primary school in the state would receive copies of the revised curriculum, while textbooks in English Language, Mathematics, Social Studies and History would strengthen literacy and numeracy among pupils.

She noted that the reintroduction of History into the curriculum is aimed at helping pupils develop a better understanding of their heritage and cultural identity from an early age.

The SUBEB Chairman added that special education centres have been provided with Braille materials, hearing aids and other assistive devices to promote inclusive education, while the distribution of sports equipment and waste bins is expected to enhance physical development and improve environmental sanitation in schools.

She further disclosed that junior secondary schools would receive textbooks in Digital Technology, Information Technology, Basic Science, Social Citizenship, National Values, English and Mathematics to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required in an increasingly digital world.

Representing the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Mr. Solomon Apre described the exercise as a significant milestone in strengthening teaching and learning, noting that the intervention would improve classroom instruction, support extracurricular activities and foster cleaner, healthier learning environments.

Also speaking, the Board Secretary, Mr. Etta Inyang, said the distribution marks the culmination of the 2025 intervention programme implemented over the past six months. He explained that all materials would be properly documented and monitored by both SUBEB and UBEC to ensure transparency, accountability and effective utilization.

Inyang expressed confidence that the instructional materials would significantly improve literacy, numeracy and digital learning outcomes across the state. He also urged parents, teachers and other stakeholders to support government efforts towards improving basic education, stressing that “Education for All is the Responsibility of All.”

The ceremony featured the symbolic handover of the educational materials to Education Secretaries from the 18 Local Government Areas for onward distribution to beneficiary public schools across Cross River State.
