CUDA Executive Secretary Commends Staff, Reaffirms Commitment to Urban Sanitation

The Executive Secretary of the Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA), Chief Ayi Etim Effiong, has commended staff members for their dedication to duty and urged them to sustain efforts toward maintaining environmental standards in the city.

Elder Ayi spoke during a surprise birthday celebration organised in his honour by staff of the agency on 1st May 2026 at his office in Calabar. He attributed CUDA’s achievements to teamwork and the support of the Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu.

“I wouldn’t have succeeded without all of you around, and without someone like Senator Bassey Otu behind me,” he said, stressing that strong leadership remains critical to institutional success.

He also reflected on his rise through the civil service, noting that his experience—from early struggles to retiring as a director—has shaped his leadership approach and commitment to mentoring others.

Chief Etim emphasised the need for professionalism in the discharge of duties, charging staff to enforce environmental laws firmly while maintaining a humane approach.

“Your actions must be guided by law and carried out with a human face,” he stated.

He further reiterated the agency’s resolve to tackle environmental infractions, including indiscriminate waste disposal and poor sanitation practices, noting that maintaining order in the city remains a top priority.

Despite the celebration, he disclosed that he typically dedicates such occasions to field operations, supervising sanitation and enforcement activities across Calabar.

Earlier, staff members presented a gift to the Executive Secretary in appreciation of his leadership, encouragement, and support. A representative of the staff pledged continued commitment to improving performance and delivering on the agency’s mandate.

The event concluded with applause and the ceremonial cutting of a birthday cake.
