Global Opportunities Beckon as UNICROSS Seals Cyprus Academic Pact

The Vice Chancellor of University of Cross River State, Professor Francisca Bassey, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to internationalisation and global academic collaboration following a strategic engagement visit to Cyprus International University in April 2026.

The high-level visit formed part of ongoing efforts by the university administration to expand international partnerships, strengthen research cooperation, and create broader academic opportunities for students and faculty members of UNICROSS.

During the visit, Professor Bassey was warmly received by the President of Cyprus International University, Professor Dr. Erbug Celebi, who delivered a comprehensive presentation on the institution’s academic structure, innovation ecosystem, multicultural learning environment, institutional vision, and sustainability-driven initiatives.

A major highlight of the engagement was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both institutions, formalising a strategic partnership initiative championed by the UNICROSS Vice Chancellor. The agreement is expected to open new pathways for academic exchange, collaborative research, and institutional development between the two universities.

Professor Bassey also held high-level discussions with Mr. Mete Boyaci, Chancellor of Cyprus International University and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Levent Holdings.

As part of the engagement, the Vice Chancellor toured several facilities under Levent Holdings, including the Winery, Olive Plantation, Solar Farm, Brick Factory, and Animal Farm, where she observed advanced automated milk production systems and innovative waste recycling processes, including the conversion of cow dung into reusable resources.

The tour showcased CIU’s strong commitment to sustainable agricultural practices, environmentally responsible production systems, and technology-driven innovation.

In another strategic meeting, Professor Bassey engaged with Professor Majid, Senior Advisor, Board of Trustees International Office, to explore critical areas of collaboration between both institutions.

Discussions centred on student exchange programmes, joint supervision of postgraduate research, dual-degree and progression pathways, as well as CIU’s expertise in accreditation procedures and global university ranking systems.

The Vice Chancellor also visited the university’s Sustainable Building Laboratories, Engineering Workshop, Engineering Factory Laser facilities, and automobile production units, where additional opportunities for collaborative innovation, research partnerships, and technology exchange were identified.

Cyprus International University’s impressive global reputation was further highlighted during the visit, with the institution’s achievements in the 2025 UI GreenMetric Rankings highlighted. CIU currently ranks 55th globally, 1st in Cyprus, 3rd in Turkey, and 22nd in Europe in sustainability performance.

Beyond institutional engagements, Professor Bassey also interacted with members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (Turkish Zone), where she delivered a keynote address titled, “Knowledge Transfer and Nation Building: The Role of Africans in the Diaspora.”

In her address, she encouraged African students in the diaspora to utilise their international exposure, skills, and knowledge toward driving meaningful development across the African continent, while emphasising excellence, responsibility, and transformational leadership.
