In a major boost for women’s football, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has approved an increase in the monthly subvention for Pelican Stars FC from N5 million to N15 million.
The move follows a similar recent increase for the state’s male team, Rovers FC, highlighting the Governor’s commitment to revitalizing sports and nurturing local talent across the board.
Mr Etta Lawrence Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, disclosed the news to journalists in Calabar.
He revealed that the Governor expressed dissatisfaction upon learning of the previous N5 million allocation, promptly approving the improved package to boost player morale and operational efficiency.
"I want to appreciate His Excellency, Apostle Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, for this gesture," Mrs. Aribiah stated.
"This is not just something to be excited about; it is a call to action. We must prove to the Governor that his investment will not be in vain. Our goal is to ensure Pelican Stars returns to its former glory."
Mrs. Aribiah explained that the N10 million increase removes previous financial bottlenecks that hindered the team's performance. "With the subvention at N5 million, excuses were inevitable. Now there are no excuses. This funding allows management to do the right thing at the right time."
She further extended gratitude to the Governor’s wife, Bishop Mrs. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, the State Football Association led by Rt. Hon. Essien Ayi, and the Sports Commission management for their roles in securing the increment.
Mrs. Aribiah assured the public that the team would strive for excellence. "By the grace of God, we will not bow to failure or laxity, adding, "We will work hard to ensure His Excellency gets the results the State deserves."
