The Governor of Cross River State, Senator (Prince) Bassey Otu, has commended the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Calabar and District Society, for its achievements within one year under the administration of its 13th Chairman, Dr. Mrs. Glory Tony Effiong, FCA, FCTI.
The Governor, represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, PhD, gave the commendation on Tuesday during the commissioning of the district’s secretariat project, which also formed part of activities marking the chairman’s one-year anniversary in office in Calabar.
Odey praised the leadership of the district for its commitment to institutional growth and assured it of the government’s continued support for laudable projects. He also expressed optimism that the new secretariat would position Calabar to become an ICAN examination centre.
Earlier in her address, Dr. Mrs. Glory Effiong described the commissioning of the secretariat as the fulfillment of a long-cherished vision and a major milestone for the district, which had operated for years without a permanent office.
She thanked Governor Bassey Otu for the support that made the project possible, particularly through her appointment as Accountant-General of the state, and also appreciated supporters who contributed building materials toward the project.
Dr. Effiong highlighted achievements recorded within one year of her administration, including the district’s first medical screening programme, the “Catch Them Young” initiative, welfare support for members, and the mobilization of over 200 members to the zonal conference in Port Harcourt, while appealing for support to complete payment for the land housing the secretariat.
A highpoint of the event was the pledge of the sum of fifteen million naira by the Deputy Governor, on behalf of the Governor, as part of the state government’s support for the ICAN project, as well as the formal commissioning of the ICAN secretariat and inspection of the building.
