Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has described the late Professor Emmanuel Bassey Eyo as a rare gem whose life was defined by intellect, faith, humility, and dedicated service to society.
Governor Otu made the remarks at the commendation and funeral service held in honour of the late professor at the ASUU Secretariat, University of Calabar, on Saturday.
The Governor, represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the respected academic, popularly known as Monsignor, describing his death as a big loss to the state and humanity. He noted that until his demise, Prof. Eyo served with distinction as Programme Coordinator of the Cross River State NEWMAP, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership in environmental sustainability and positively impacted many communities across the state.
Dr. Odey further acknowledged the late scholar’s contributions to academia, noting that although he was on leave of absence, he remained a respected lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and Leadership Studies at the University of Calabar, where he mentored and shaped future leaders for over two decades.
He also extolled Prof. Eyo’s devotion to the Roman Catholic faith and his commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that he contributed immensely to the development of the state through wisdom, integrity, and selfless service. The Governor prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and asked God to grant comfort and strength to the bereaved family.
In his homily, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Felix Ojong reflected on Deuteronomy 32:39, emphasizing God’s sovereignty over life and death and the importance of living meaningfully in preparation for eternity.
In her tribute, his wife, Mrs. Rose Emmanuel Eyo, described her late husband as her companion, strength, and life partner, noting that he was a pillar of support, a loving father, and a disciplined guide to his children, instilling values that will endure across generations.
Earlier, while reading the biography of the deceased, the first son, Emmanuel Eyo Jr., stated that his father was born on May 5, 1965, in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area, to the late Mr. Antigha Eyo and the late Deaconess Eno Eyo. He attended Sacred Heart Primary School, Calabar, and later proceeded to Immaculate Conception Seminary, Mfamosing, and Brigad Memorial Seminary, Ikot Ekpene.
He further noted that Prof. Eyo pursued higher education at the University of Calabar, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and PhD in Philosophy, as well as a degree in Law. He later practiced law and lectured at the University of Calabar until his appointment as State Coordinator of NEWMAP by Governor Otu.
In his remarks during the commendation service, Pst. Prof. Andrew Uduigwomen, quoting Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, noted that death is a leveler and urged mourners to emulate the good deeds of a man he described as being known for dedication, professionalism, and a warm demeanor, often bridging the gap between technical expertise and community needs.
