NEMA, CR-SEMA Distribute Relief Materials to Victims of Edibe-Edibe Gas Explosion in Calabar

Victims of the recent gas explosion in Calabar’s Edibe-Edibe community have received food supplies and relief items through a joint effort by the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The distribution took place on May 25, 2026, at the CR-SEMA warehouse on Barracks Road, Calabar, two months after the devastating explosion and fire left residents and properties badly affected.

Items distributed included bags of rice, beans, garri, detergents, seasoning cubes, tomatoes, groundnut oil, and other essential foodstuffs.

The exercise was overseen by CR-SEMA Director General Mr. Antigha Edem Gill and NEMA’s Head of Operations for Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, Mrs. Aisueni Mmandu.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Mr. Edem Gill said the relief was part of ongoing efforts to support victims and ease the hardship caused by the disaster. He acknowledged that the intervention could not fully replace what was lost, but described it as a demonstration of the government’s concern and commitment to affected residents.

He assured victims that the Cross River State Government, under Governor Senator Prince Bassey Otu, remains dedicated to the welfare of all citizens. He also urged beneficiaries to make good use of the items and advised residents to stay safety-conscious, especially when handling gas and other flammable materials at home.

Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude to both federal and State Government. Mr. Eric Asubor thanked NEMA and CR-SEMA for remembering the victims, calling the support timely. Mrs. Affiong said the intervention would ease the burden on families affected by the tragedy. Madam Nnoyong Nsa also praised the government for standing with residents in a difficult period and prayed for continued support to vulnerable communities across the State.
