The Senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District, Senator Eteng Jonah Williams, has called for calm and reconciliation between Ugep and Idomi communities in Yakurr Local Government Area, urging residents to embrace peace amid the lingering land dispute.
In a message addressed to both communities, the lawmaker appealed for restraint, stressing that no disagreement over land should degenerate into violence or destruction.
“I write to you not just as your Senator, but as a son of this land, deeply concerned about the lingering disagreements between two communities that have, for generations, lived side by side as brothers,” he said.
Williams warned that conflict would only worsen the situation, noting that violence creates lasting damage and setbacks for affected communities.
“No piece of land is worth the loss of lives or destruction of property. War does not solve problems; it only creates deeper wounds and sets us back as a people,” he stated.
He urged residents of both communities to reflect on their shared heritage and longstanding ties, emphasizing unity and peaceful coexistence.
“The Ugep man and the Idomi man are from the same ancestral roots. We are brothers from the same parents, and as brothers, we must resolve our differences through dialogue, mutual respect and forgiveness,” he added.
The senator also called on traditional rulers and community leaders to intensify efforts toward peacebuilding, noting that their leadership remains critical at this time.
“I urge our traditional rulers and community leaders to continue leading the peace process with wisdom, courage and sincerity,” he said.
Williams further appealed to residents to support the Cross River State Government and relevant institutions working to mediate in the dispute.
He reassured the communities of his commitment to their wellbeing, stating that peace and stability in the area remain his top priority.
“Your peace is my priority,” he affirmed.
The appeal comes amid renewed efforts by stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and restore lasting peace between the neighbouring communities.
