The management of the University of Cross River State has announced that no approval has been granted for any candlelight procession in honour of students who recently lost their lives, urging the student body to embrace a more orderly and reflective mode of mourning.
In a notice issued on May 7, 2026, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Victor Ndifon, said the decision was taken to maintain peace and prevent any situation that could lead to disorder within the university community.
The directive follows the tragic loss of three students and a staff member, an incident that has cast a somber mood across the institution.
While acknowledging the grief and emotional strain on students, the university management emphasized the need for restraint, noting that it is actively monitoring the condition of other students who sustained injuries and are still receiving treatment.
“As the University community continues to mourn, it is important that we avoid any situation capable of causing disorder or disrupting peace,” the statement read.
The management instead called on students to participate in a solemn assembly scheduled for May 8, where prayers will be offered for the repose of the departed and for the healing and unity of the university.
Students were urged to cooperate with the directive and support ongoing efforts by the university to navigate the difficult period with dignity and calm.
