UNICROSS Holds Solemn Assembly for Accident Victims, Thanks God for Survivors

The University of Cross River State on Friday held a solemn assembly at its Calabar campus to honour three students and a staff member who lost their lives in the tragic road accident that occurred in Odukpani Local Government Area on May 1, while also thanking God for the survival of 21 others.

The emotional gathering, held under the theme, “Oh Lord, Show UNICROSS Mercy,” brought together the university management, staff, students, religious leaders, families of victims, and well-wishers in an atmosphere of prayer, reflection, and gratitude.

Addressing the assembly, the Vice Chancellor, Francisca Bassey, expressed deep sorrow over the incident but thanked God for preserving the lives of the survivors.

Describing the accident as painful and heartbreaking, the Vice Chancellor urged members of the university community to remain steadfast in faith and gratitude to God for His mercy and protection.

Prof. Bassey explained that the university bus conveying the students had been properly serviced before embarking on the journey, adding that the crash occurred after another vehicle reportedly veered into the path of the UNICROSS bus.

She commended Innocent Abang, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Council of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, for his prompt medical intervention and role in coordinating emergency care for the victims, noting that his swift response helped save lives and prevent more severe injuries.

The Vice Chancellor also praised the Cross River State Government, the Students’ Union Government (SUG), and members of the university management team, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Stella Maris Okey, for their support and tireless efforts throughout the difficult period.

Calling for repentance, unity, and responsible living, Prof. Bassey urged staff and students to draw closer to God and shun destructive attitudes capable of undermining peace within the university community.

“Let us look to God our Creator, who is the sustainer of our lives, the author and finisher of our faith. He holds our today and our tomorrow. Our destinies are in His hands,” she said.

Special prayers were offered for divine mercy, protection, healing, peace, and continued progress for the institution.

Delivering a sermon titled “Vessels of Mercy, Carriers of His Glory,” Prof. Abang, who is also a pastor, emphasized repentance, dependence on God, and appreciation for the gift of life. Other ministers, including Pastor Ayang Umoren of God Wonders Service, also led prayers during the assembly.

In an emotional vote of thanks, the SUG President, Comrade Ogar Favour, who survived the accident, expressed gratitude to God, the university management, medical personnel, and all individuals who contributed to the rescue and support efforts.
