UNICROSS Mourns Students, Staff Lost in Tragic Accident

The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has been thrown into mourning following a tragic road accident involving students and a staff member of the institution, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.

In an official statement signed by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Onen Ebri Onen, the management said the accident involved 24 students and one staff member, most of whom were members of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) executive, returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The incident occurred at Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The university confirmed that three students and one staff member lost their lives in the accident.

The deceased were identified as Comrade Solomon Uya, Director of Sports of the SUG; Comrade Lucky Erim of the Department of Chemistry and President of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association as well as President of Presidents; Comrade Favour Darlington of the Department of Educational Management; and Mr. Anthony Arikpo, the driver of the vehicle and a staff member of the institution.

Survivors of the crash are currently receiving medical attention at various hospitals, with the university assuring that adequate care is being provided.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Francisca Bassey, accompanied by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Stella Maris-Okey, visited the injured students at the hospitals, where they expressed solidarity and monitored their treatment.

The university said the Vice Chancellor remained with the victims until the early hours of the day to ensure that all necessary medical support was being given.

Professor Bassey expressed deep shock over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

She also reassured the injured students and their families of the institution’s unwavering support, emphasizing that their recovery and well-being remain a top priority.

The management further assured parents and guardians that the affected students are receiving the best possible medical attention.
