In a powerful display of community pride and cultural affirmation, the Akpabuyo Traditional Rulers' Council has formally installed Dr Abigail Duke Orok, Cross River State's Commissioner for Commerce, with the prestigious chieftaincy title of Eka Uwana Akpabuyo — "Mother of Light."
The ceremony, held over the weekend, drew thousands of residents, traditional rulers, political leaders, market women, and youth groups from across the state. Far more than a ceremonial honour, the gathering served as a public endorsement of Dr Orok's decades of grassroots service, humility, and transformative leadership.
"The title 'Eka Uwana Akpabuyo' reflects a true calling , to bring illumination, direction, hope, and steady growth to our people," declared HRM Etinyin Francis Effiom Edem Efa, Chairman of the Traditional Rulers' Council, during the installation. "It is both an honour and a charge to continue leading with wisdom, nurturing with compassion, and standing as a beacon for generations to come."
The council stressed that the recognition was not merely a political courtesy but a heartfelt tribute to a woman whose life has been dedicated to uplifting others from boardrooms to community halls and market squares.
The event, held at the Akpabuyo Town Hall, was a colourful fusion of traditional music, dance, and pageantry. Dignitaries included representatives of the state government, local council chairmen, and prominent business leaders.
In his keynote address, HRM Etinyin Francis Effiom Edem Efa noted that the honour defies the common adage that a prophet has no honour in their own home. He praised Dr Orok for her unwavering commitment to the development of the local government area, long before she assumed public office.
"Today, Akpabuyo proves that we recognise and celebrate our own. Dr Orok has not waited for titles to serve; she has served, and titles now find her," the monarch added.
According to him, as Commissioner for Commerce under Governor Bassey Otu's administration, Dr Orok has earned a reputation as a results-driven, people-first public servant. Her tenure has been marked by tangible achievements, including:
- Empowering SMEs — expanding access to micro-funding and business development resources for local traders
- Women and youth upliftment — launching skill-acquisition programmes aimed at financial independence
- Economic expansion — integrating rural markets into broader state-wide economic networks
The chieftaincy title, the council noted, stands as a testament to her vision of leveraging governance and commerce to improve everyday lives.

In her emotional acceptance speech, the newly installed Eka Uwana Akpabuyo expressed profound humility and returned all praise to God.
"I am deeply humbled by this honour," Dr Orok said. "This is not about me; it is about the collective hope and strength of our people.
"I thank the Governor of Cross River State for the opportunity to serve, and I extend my heartfelt appreciation to HRM Etinyin Francis Effiom Edem Efa and the entire Traditional Council for deeming me worthy of this revered title."
She pledged that her new role as "Mother of Light" would translate into tangible development, enhanced peace, and greater prosperity for Akpabuyo and Cross River State at large.
"From today, I rededicate myself to the service of our communities, ensuring that the light we celebrate today shines brighter in every home, every market, and every enterprise," she added.
