The Cross River State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure electoral process, as the Commissioner of Police, Rashid B. Afegbua, received the newly posted Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. George Yomere, during a courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters in Calabar.
The visit marked the beginning of strategic engagements between the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of upcoming electoral activities in the state.
Prof. Yomere, who was accompanied by members of his team, said the visit was part of efforts to familiarise himself with the security architecture of the state following his recent deployment. He briefed the police on the ongoing voter registration exercise and disclosed that preparations were in top gear for the commencement of the third phase across Cross River.
He emphasized the need for sustained synergy between the police and other security agencies to guarantee a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process, stressing that effective security is critical to public confidence in elections.
Responding, Afegbua assured the REC of the Command’s readiness to work closely with INEC and other stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
“The Command remains fully committed to providing adequate security before, during, and after the elections. We will continue to collaborate with INEC to ensure that all electoral activities are conducted in a safe and orderly environment,” the CP stated.
He further assured residents of the state of the police’s preparedness to create a secure atmosphere that would enable eligible voters to participate freely in the democratic process without fear, intimidation, or harassment.
