Democracy Must Be Lived, Not Just Celebrated - Aviation Commissioner

On this momentous occasion of June 12 Democracy Day, we come together as a nation to reflect on a defining chapter in Nigeria’s history. This day is far more than a public holiday; it is a powerful symbol of the unwavering spirit and determination of the Nigerian people in their quest for genuine democratic governance. It marks the triumph of the popular will over past challenges and serves as a solemn reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold the sanctity of democracy. As the Commissioner for Aviation in Cross River State, I am honored to extend my warmest congratulations to every Nigerian, both at home and abroad, as well as to democracy advocates worldwide who cherish the values of freedom, justice, and equality.

June 12 shines as a beacon of hope, cutting through the pages of history to remind us of the sacrifices made by countless patriots who stood firm against oppression. It is a day to honor those who fought tirelessly to ensure that liberty, fairness, and the rule of law remain the foundation of our nation. This commemoration renews our commitment to nurturing and strengthening democracy in every aspect of our national life.

Within the Ministry of Aviation in Cross River State, we have embraced these democratic ideals by translating them into practical governance. Our approach goes beyond rhetoric to establish a system that is transparent, accountable, and inclusive. We actively engage all stakeholders, ensuring that the voices of our people are not only heard but respected and integrated into our decision-making processes. This dedication has enabled us to set a high standard for governance and service delivery within the aviation sector.

Our initiatives have significantly propelled the aviation industry forward, a sector vital to Nigeria’s economic growth. By modernizing operations, we have created employment opportunities, improved connectivity within and beyond our borders, and contributed to national development. More importantly, we have embedded democratic values into every facet of our work, ensuring that decisions are made with integrity, fairness, and a genuine commitment to public service. We manage the skies as a shared resource, reflecting the egalitarian principles that June 12 represents.

The progress achieved by the ministry is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team and reflects Nigeria’s broader democratic evolution. Our efforts resonate beyond our immediate environment, inspiring democratic reforms across Africa and the global community. This progress demonstrates that sincere application of democratic principles leads to tangible improvements in people’s lives.

As we mark this historic day, I urge all Nigerians to renew their commitment to protecting and deepening democracy. Our democracy must remain vibrant, inclusive, and responsive to the diverse needs and aspirations of every citizen. Democracy is a living system that requires constant care, participation, and vigilance to thrive.

Let us envision and work toward a future where democracy is not merely a theoretical concept or periodic electoral exercise but a lived reality that empowers every individual, protects the vulnerable, and provides a platform for all to reach their full potential. Together, through unity and shared purpose, we can build a Nigeria that stands as a permanent beacon of hope and progress for the world.

Happy Democracy Day to all! Captain Eno Utum (Rtd) Commissioner for Aviation Cross River State.
