The Executive Chairman of Obudu Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, has extended a warm invitation to the people of Obudu, Cross River State, and visitors from far and near to the Obudu New Yam Festival 2026, promising a celebration that will be bigger, bolder, and culturally satisfying.
In a statement made available to the media, Hon. Undiandeye assured that this year’s festival will be bigger, bolder, and more culturally satisfying, building on the remarkable success of the previous edition. He noted that the 2026 celebration is being carefully designed to offer a richer and more memorable cultural experience, with greater emphasis on the traditions, customs, values, and heritage that define the people of Obudu. According to him, the festival is not merely a celebration of the new harvest, but a deliberate effort to reconnect the people with their roots, strengthen communal unity, and showcase the uniqueness of Obudu culture to the wider world.
The Chairman, who has continued to champion the preservation and promotion of Obudu’s rich cultural heritage, said this year’s festival is designed to further strengthen the bond among the people while showcasing the customs, traditions, values, and cultural identity of the Obudu people. Under the theme “Honoring Our Roots, Celebrating Our Heritage,” the 2026 edition of the Obudu New Yam Festival is expected to provide an even greater platform for cultural expression, unity, entertainment, and community participation.
As part of the activities leading up to the festival and the Power Week scheduled for 1st September 2026, Chairman Undiandeye is also encouraging sons and daughters of Obudu, particularly youths and sports enthusiasts, to actively participate in the 13th Edition of the Comrade Adamade Football Competition. He described the competition as an important platform for promoting unity, discovering and nurturing sporting talents, fostering healthy relationships among communities, and strengthening the spirit of togetherness that defines the people of Obudu.
The festival, popularly identified with Bewhutang, represents more than the celebration of a new harvest. It is a reaffirmation of Obudu’s history, ancestral heritage, communal values, and the responsibility of the present generation to preserve its cultural legacy for generations yet unborn. Dr. Undiandeye has therefore called on sons and daughters of Obudu, residents, traditional institutions, friends of Obudu, football lovers, and visitors to participate actively in the various activities leading to the celebration and join hands in making the 2026 edition a memorable one.
He assured that the festival will be bigger in participation, bolder in presentation, and richer in cultural content, providing everyone with an opportunity to experience the beauty and uniqueness of Obudu culture.
