WORLD DRUG DAY: SACA DG Commends Otu's Anti-Drug Initiatives, Urges Sustained Action

The Director-General of the Cross River State Agency for the Control of AIDS (SACA), Dr. Charles Iwara, has commended the Cross River State Government for its sustained commitment to combating drug abuse, describing the administration's efforts as vital to protecting public health and curbing the spread of HIV.

Speaking to journalists in Calabar on Thursday to mark the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day), Dr. Iwara praised the administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu, with the support of the First Lady, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, for prioritising the fight against substance abuse across the state.

He particularly lauded the Governor for establishing the State Committee Against Drug Abuse, describing the initiative as a clear demonstration of the government's resolve to protect young people from the dangers of drug abuse and build healthier communities.

Dr. Iwara also expressed solidarity with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders for their unwavering efforts in tackling the growing menace of substance abuse.

According to him, the rising incidence of drug abuse in Cross River remains a major public health challenge, as it undermines efforts to reduce HIV transmission.

He explained that substance abuse often leads to impaired judgment and risky behaviours, including unprotected sex and other practices that heighten the risk of HIV infection.

He stressed that tackling drug abuse is essential to strengthening HIV prevention strategies and safeguarding the health and well-being of residents.

The SACA Director-General reaffirmed the agency's commitment to collaborating with the state government, the NDLEA, civil society organisations, development partners and other stakeholders to intensify public awareness campaigns, promote healthy lifestyles and discourage substance abuse, particularly among young people.

"As we commemorate World Drug Day, we stand in solidarity with all agencies and stakeholders leading the fight against drug abuse. We appreciate the commitment of His Excellency, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, and the First Lady, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, for their leadership and support in addressing this challenge. Together, we must continue to protect our youths and strengthen the fight against HIV through sustained action against drug abuse," Dr. Iwara said.

World Drug Day, observed annually on June 26, seeks to raise global awareness of the dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking while promoting coordinated action to prevent substance use disorders, protect communities and foster healthier, drug-free societies.
